The most common mistake people make when decorating is hanging wall art too high. Paintings and pictures should be hung for easy viewing, near eye-level. Wall art should give context to a room, but when hung too high, paintings and prints appear to float and be completely unrelated to the room. Take a look around and make sure your pictures, paintings, and prints are where they should be–near eye-level.

Is that eye level for the center of the artwork?

Great question, Lee Anne. I would suggest thinking of it more in terms of a range of average eye level so that you don’t feel limited to exact measurements. But, certainly as you suggest, you want to consider the focal point of a given piece and where you want the eye to be drawn.
You can definitely add depth and interest to a room by hanging different pieces at varying heights. So, do allow yourself flexibility and variety within that general range. You just want people to have a comfortable (and interesting) view, whether seated or standing—without having to crane their necks.
I hope that helps to clarify. And, thanks, again, for the great question.
